Another blog post, another eight months flown by. It’s no big secret that I’m horrible at regularly maintaining this site, but it was recently brought to my attention that even since just last winter, there was some info on here that had gotten really out of date. Since today is Labor Day, better known as the Unofficial Start of Fall, it seemed as good a time as any to take a moment to update some of that stuff and quickly share what I’ve been up to for the first two-thirds of the year.
Big Thing Number One: I graduated from the University of Tulsa and now have a college degree in computer science! I have since moved out of Tulsa and (after a temporary stint back home in Missouri) to Ann Arbor, MI to start the next phase of my life. It was the first “true” move I feel like I’ve ever done, and I’ve gotta say— moving is such a weirdly exciting and yet melancholy experience. When I moved out of Tulsa, I had so many people helping me that it felt like everything happened too fast for me to process. I was so self-conscious of just owning things and felt weird about friends and family seeing all of it, even if it was just a bunch of dusty textbooks and kitchen utensils. I knew it was time for me to leave, but at the same time I felt like I never really got to say goodbye to the spaces that held so many treasured memories from the last four years.
So when it came time to move into Ann Arbor, I was adamant that I would make the move all by myself. I loaded up Appa (that’s my minivan, which I’ve lovingly named after the flying bison from Avatar: The Last Airbender) with belongings and headed out, excited about what my new surroundings might bring. But when I actually arrived to the new place and started unpacking, I was totally overwhelmed by how sad and alone I was in a big, unfamiliar territory. The whole experience was just weird, and I guess the only point I’m trying to make here is that it seems like moving is a weird experience no matter where you are or who’s around (or not around) you.
Anyway. I’ve been here in Ann Arbor (or A2, as the locals say) about a month now, and I’m happy to report that I feel much better adjusted since my first day. Which brings me to Big Thing Number Two: I’m starting graduate school here at the University of Michigan, getting a master’s in urban planning! Pursuing this has been something I’ve really, really wanted to do for a couple of years now and I couldn’t be happier to finally be here. It was kind of a long and difficult process (in a number of ways) figuring out exactly where I wanted to go after finishing undergrad; now that I’m here, it definitely feels like I’ve made the right choice.
Class starts tomorrow for me, and while I know that grad school is probably going to keep me busier than ever, I will try to keep updating this site with some of the things I learn and make. (No promises, though.) Also, there are a few projects from my last semester at TU that I’ll try to post as well— I’m proud of them, and I think they’re a good benchmark for the kind of work I’ll be doing combining urban planning and CS in the coming years.
Until then— cheers & happy fall!
